Our Thankful Tree

I got this idea from my friend Shanae. She gave me the paper tree too and I just store it with my fall decorations. I had some paper leaves leftover from a Primary activity that I cut out. Every day (well we did miss some) during November everyone would write something they were thankful for on a leaf and color it and then get to put it on the tree. I used the blue putty stuff to protect the paint and to be able to re-use the tree over and over. There are duplicates because we are all thankful for our family, etc. The girls had fun with it.

Some of the things we are thankful for:
Jesus Christ
The Earth
Family
Sledding
Our Home
Our Bodies
The Prophet
Love
Friends
Our Car
School

Every year we go to Grandma Dart's house for Thanksgiving. It is a full house with lots of love and great food. My mom was able to go with us. Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving we did a booth with our temple pictures at a big Christmas craft fair. The idea of this business was to be a fun hobby, but it has ended up being able to supplement our income. It turned a profit the first event we did and continues to do well. We are very blessed.

First Snow

We had a pretty dry fall. The first real snow didn't come until mid-November. The girls were so excited to see they took the chance to go out and play in it right away. They made snow angels and a snow man.

Denali Turns 4!

I still can't believe Denali is 4 already. I was pregnant with her when we moved to Ephraim and I still feel like we just moved here. She decided that she wanted a "Chocolate" themed party. We put some chocolate chips in a snack-sized plastic baggy and stapled it to a note promising the guests they would have a "sweet" time. We invited 4 sets of neighbor siblings, so a total of 8 friends. Alexis read them the book, "Choco-Louie." It is about a boy who won't eat anything but chocolate and realizes that isn't as great as he thought it would be. We borrowed a chocolate fountain and had all sorts of goodies to dip in it. We made chocolate cupcakes. I used a large round tip to swirl to frosting on top and then we topped them with different kinds of chocolate candies and sprinkles. Milk was served to drink with all that chocolate. We opened presents and let them play with the gifts for a bit and then had a treasure hunt. Greg wrote some rhyming clues and the kids were off running from clue to clue and loving it. The surprise at the end was treat bags filled with different chocolate candy. We bought the candy marked down after Halloween and the party including her gifts only cost $50. It was a fun day!

Alexis Cross-Eyed

Alexis learned how to cross her eyes. She wanted to know what it looks like when she does it, so I took a picture!

Halloween

Carving Pumpkins

Alexis wanted her pumpkin to have glasses

Denali's has eyelashes and Paxton colored on his too

We made the best sugar cookies. In fact my mouth is watering looking at the picture.

Sorting their candy

Jack-O-Lantern Pizzas

Paxton was so cute saying trick or treat. His mouth if full of french fries in this video, but that just makes it even cuter I think.

I told the kids we were not spending any money on costumes this year. So Alexis decided to wear her Unicorn costume she had worn 2 years earlier. Denali chose whatever dress-up item she wanted and was Fancy Nancy. And Paxton, to Dad's delight, was a Ute Football player. We bought this when Alexis was little and Alexis and Denali have both worn it for Halloween before.
We carved pumpkins the night before Halloween. Denali had a costume party at Preschool. Alexis came home really sick from school on Thursday and missed the party and costume parade at the school on Friday. She was really bummed. Luckily she felt good on Saturday when we went trick-treating. It started to rain during our trick-or-treating, but it didn't last long. We went around our neighborhood and to a few friends houses. Sunday was actually October 31 and we made Jack-O-Lantern pizzas for dinner. It was a fun week!

Pumpkin Patch

Denali's preschool took a field trip to the pumpkin patch in Centerfield. I can't remember why Alexis didn't have school that day, but she was able to come with us. They have a hay maze and they let the kids actually go out in the field and cut their own pumpkin from the vine. They grow all sorts of gourds and pumpkins and squash, etc. Some day I want to buy one and try tomake a pie.

Denali and her friend Stanley in the maze

They could pick as large of a pumpkin as they could carry. And they all were so proud of their pumpkins!

I am a Runner

I have always enjoyed running. It is a form of exercise where you don't have to think much about your exercise, the only hard part is getting out of bed and going. Last February I started a weight loss group with 20 women in my community. Each child I had kept on about 10 pounds and I decided it was time to lose the baby weight. I had a treadmill I had purchased for $20 at a yard sale a few years before. I started walking on it. And then I started to run. In fact, I remember watching the Olympics on TV and pushing myself to try and run for 5 minutes and then I could walk. The end of May I ran my first 10k and in 65 minutes. In 10th grade we took a careers class and wrote some goals. One of those goals I wrote was to run a marathon. I have wanted to do one since, but have been busy having children or nursing a baby, or working, or moving, or too depressed to get myself out of the house, etc. So after running the 10k and feeling awesome about it, I decided 2010 would be my year. In August I registered for the Mesquite Marathon on November 20. As part of my training I decided to run the Spanish Fork Half Marathon. I know now that it is not the best idea to train for a marathon before ever finishing a half. In fact, I was only up to about 9 miles in my training. I was training too hard, too often, not nourishing my body correctly and with cheap shoes which led to a knee injury 2 weeks before the marathon in November. I tried resting, but I couldn't even get to one mile before I teared up in pain. I was devastated. All of the hours, the Saturday morning long runs, the dream of finishing a marathon were destroyed. I know that sounds dramatic. But anyone who has been there will understand exactly what I mean and the emotions that come with it.

However, I did complete the Spanish Fork Half Marathon in September. And I finished 21 minutes faster than my goal time. Honestly I finished too quickly. I didn't have a watch and I really didn't have a clue with how long I had been running. But there were so many people and people were passing me and I didn't know how many were behind me and the whole race felt like I was behind and trying to catch up. Most of the time, all I could think was, "How in the world am I ever going to be able to go twice this distance!" But there is a great sense of pride finishing a race. And the pain is mostly forgotten. My chip time was 2 hours 8 minutes and 43 seconds. So I averaged just under 10 minute miles. I placed 135th out of 197 overall and 52nd out of 98 women. So not too shabby.
Greg, the kids and Greg's parents were waiting for me at the finish line. I started crying shortly after this picture. I was so happy to see my kids cheering for me, so exhausted, and so happy to be at the finish line!
Cuddling my kids after the race.
Almost asleep while they were handing out awards. I actually won a Real Salt Lake jersey.

Running turned out to be therapeutic for me. It is time to myself. I have an opportunity to think uninterrupted thoughts. Most mornings I watched the sun rise and have grown an enormous amount of gratitude for the beauty of the earth. I lost a total of 25 pounds in 2010. However, I have gained back almost 10 pounds since I started healing my knee, eating too much over the holidays, and struggling with the motivation to get started again. It's cold and dark outside! I was fitted for new running shoes and purchased some and have started reading more about nutrition and how to safely train and hope to run at least another half marathon this year. I don't want to consider a marathon until I get to that point and feel well. Once I finish getting this blog up to date, I can post regularly about my progress.

Paxtons Also Loves Books

Paxton loves the Usborne books that have a duck hidden on each page. We love playing, "Where's the Duck? There it is!"

Beginning a Garden

When I was young, my dad always planted a garden. I loved helping him. I especially loved eating the peas and carrots fresh from the garden. But I was too young to really know the science of and how to grow a garden. It's been on my To-do list for a long time. We had extra space next to our swing set. And there were extra boards sitting against our back fence. So I weeded, pushed extra sand under the swing set. Cut the logs and staked them down. Then I tried to turn the sand and soil that was there. Our ground is really hard and I only had a shovel and my little bit of muscle to work with. Luckily Walmart had soil and peat moss marked down 50% off the clearance price. So I was able to buy 4 bags of each and build up some good soil. I also added some sawdust from our garage and some grass and leaf clippings. Someday I would like to learn more about composting and such, but I was so excited to get this far. It isn't a large garden, but it is a good starting point. I am looking forward to experimenting what grows well.

Paxton Can Shoot!

Paxton loves sports already. He loves every kind of ball, but I think basketball is his favorite. The Elementary school Christmas program is in a gym. All of the basketball hoops were lifted up into the ceiling. Paxton noticed one during the program and started yelling, "Shoot! Shoot!" Then he noticed another and another and another. He was overjoyed and quite loud in showing his excitement. But it was so cute. This video was taken in September, so Paxton was 18 months old. He definitely has some talent!

My Baby Doll

I am constantly trying to talk my kids into recycling their toys. They are always coming in, they rarely go out. The house is a mess and Mom gets mad and frustrated. Several times during de-cluttering this doll has been on the list to give or throw away. My husband actually has thrown it away before, but I rescued her. Her hair was graying from dirt, she was covered in pen marks, this photo actually has her looking pretty good. I always saved her, because she was my baby doll. My dad died when I was 9 and my Mom moved us to Utah shortly after. We were limited on the number of toys we could keep and move and this baby doll was one of my prized keepsakes.

I have been trying to simplify many areas of my life and to teach my children that stuff doesn't make us happy. People and experiences is what makes us happy. Trying to follow God's plan makes us happy. So I decided the day had come that I had to practice what I have been preaching to my children and I let baby doll go. I never even named her. I even have tears in my eyes as I write this. But honestly, the memory attached to this doll is not a happy one. The memory of this doll represents a sad and major life change I experienced. It doesn't celebrate the life of my dad. I took a picture of her before I let her go to remember how much I loved receiving her. She was so beautiful and she was special enough to be on my "keep" list when we moved.

Denali's First Day of Preschool

Denali started preschool this year. We are so lucky to have an amazing preschool teacher live across the street from us. I get to volunteer in Alexis' class one day a week while Denali goes to preschool and a friends watches Paxton. The only thing Denali doesn't like about preschool is that it is only 2 day a week:) Denali also goes to the elementary school 1 hour per week for a speech playgroup class. She has a huge vocabulary, but has trouble with articulation. She can write her name without any help.

Old Hat New Hat Read by Denali

Denali loves to read. Old Hat New Hat was one of her favorites for awhile. She can't read yet, but she had most of this book memorized. So I videoed her reading it to me.

Box Tops and Labels and Milk Caps, Oh My!

I like to be involved as much as I can in Alexis' school. I was asked to take care of our Box Tops, Campbell's Soup Labels and Cream o Weber milk caps collections for the PTA. All three are programs that give money or points to our school. We just submitted a large order of PE equipment with our soup labels. Anyway, none of them were counted or submitted for the previous school year. So we were given boxes . . . and boxes to trim, count and prepare for submission. This photo doesn't really do it justice. But Alexis was a big help. This year we have made it a contest among the classes and have already tripled the amount of money raised this year compared to what I submitted from last year's collection. I spend hours doing this every month, but all in the comfort of my home and on my own schedule. I also have had help from my Activity Days group and a Boy Scout group.

Alexis Starts 1st Grade

I still cannot believe that I have a first grader. Beginning first grade was harder for me as a parent than Kindergarten was. Kindergarten for Alexis was 2 1/2 hours in the afternoon, so it felt kind of like a daily play date. But 1st grade is 6 1/2 hours, everyday. Her teacher has the same amount of waking hours with Alexis as I do, maybe even a little bit more. If she gets hurt on the playground, her teacher comforts those tears. When she discovers new knowledge, her teacher is the one celebrating her success. It feels like letting go of my baby before I am ready. Luckily, Alexis has an amazing teacher. She did last year too, so we are lucky to have amazing teachers in Ephraim.
New pink and brown backpack
Greg's sister Caitlin lived with us for Fall semester while she attended Snow College. Alexis and Caitlin had the same first day of school. So we took their picture together!Ms. Whitney - a dedicated and inspired teacher. We are so lucky to have her!I was teary leaving Alexis on her first day. I stood in the hall for a bit to just watch her. I had to take another picture of her finding her desk.
