Beginning a Garden

When I was young, my dad always planted a garden. I loved helping him. I especially loved eating the peas and carrots fresh from the garden. But I was too young to really know the science of and how to grow a garden. It's been on my To-do list for a long time. We had extra space next to our swing set. And there were extra boards sitting against our back fence. So I weeded, pushed extra sand under the swing set. Cut the logs and staked them down. Then I tried to turn the sand and soil that was there. Our ground is really hard and I only had a shovel and my little bit of muscle to work with. Luckily Walmart had soil and peat moss marked down 50% off the clearance price. So I was able to buy 4 bags of each and build up some good soil. I also added some sawdust from our garage and some grass and leaf clippings. Someday I would like to learn more about composting and such, but I was so excited to get this far. It isn't a large garden, but it is a good starting point. I am looking forward to experimenting what grows well.
